CHALLENGE

The homeowner’s property sits along a canal in Pinecrest, facing multiple environmental challenges:

  • Erosion and bank degradation from invasive iguanas burrowing into the canal walls

  • Risk of saltwater intrusion during storm events

  • Flooding concerns during heavy rains and hurricanes

  • Desire to create a biodiverse, fully native landscape that supports local wildlife and reflects Florida’s natural beauty

"The garden is lush and blooming and we’re thrilled with the project. We have butterflies here all day every day and the kids love playing on the trail. We hope you consider something similar for your yard."

SOLUTION

Urban Habitat partnered with the homeowner to design and implement a comprehensive native landscape that addressed both ecological restoration and flood resilience.

Key Actions:

  • Native Tree Planting
Installed water-loving native trees along the canal bank, including Florida cypress, pond apple, southern red maple, and satin leaf. These deep-rooted, hurricane-resistant trees help stabilize the soil, absorb excess water, and tolerate salt exposure.

  • Flood Protection
The cypress trees’ natural "knees" strengthen the bank against erosion and can absorb up to 800 gallons of water per tree daily, reducing flood risk.

SOLUTION (CONT.)
  • Diverse Plant Selection
Over 200 species of native plants were planted throughout the property, maximizing biodiversity and ecosystem function.

  • Wildlife Habitat
The ground layer features native species like wild coffee, coontie, wax myrtle, saltbush, and giant leather fern, creating habitat for birds, butterflies, and beneficial insects.

  • Low-Maintenance Design
No mowing, fertilizers, or pesticides are needed — the landscape is self-sustaining and adapted to South Florida's climate.

  • Family Connection to Nature
A "secret garden" trail was created within the native canopy, allowing the family’s children to explore and learn about Florida’s ecosystems right in their backyard.

OUTCOME
  • The property now functions as a thriving, resilient native habitat that protects against flooding and saltwater intrusion while supporting local biodiversity.

  • The landscape requires minimal maintenance and no chemicals, reducing environmental impact and long-term costs.

  • The homeowner’s vision of bringing the Everglades into their own backyard was fully realized, creating an immersive and educational experience for the next generation.
